Understanding prostate cancer - A guide for men with cancer, their families and friends, (2009). Publisher: Cancer Council NSW. Very readable free 74-page booklet with comprehensive coverage but not as detailed as books such as that of Prem Rashid (see below). Localised prostate cancer: a guide for men and their families (2010) (4th edition). Produced by the Australian Cancer Network. The contents of this very readable booklet provide more information that its title suggests. The first two chapters provide an explanation of what prostate cancer is, and methods used to diagnose prostate cancer. Later content deals with treatment options. The authors indicate that the booklet is ‘...particularly designed for men who have localised prostate cancer (which has not spread beyond the prostate gland). It explains what localised prostate cancer is, the treatment options and their pros and cons. Its purpose is to help men make decisions about these treatments.’ Available free by download as a 3.9 MB PDF file from here. 132 pages.

Prostate cancer - your guide to the disease, treatment options and outcomes (3rd edition), 2010. Author: Associate Professor Prem Rashid. Comprehensive (307 pages) coverage of prostate diseases, diagnosis of prostate cancer, treatment options, post-treatment care, etc. Very readable. Publisher: Uronorth Group, Port Macquarie. Cost $40 including postage.

G
uide to surviving prostate cancer (2nd ed.) (2007). Author: Patrick C Walsh and Janet F Worthington. Publisher: Grand Central Publishing. Very comprehensive book with similar coverage to Rashid's, albeit a little out of date now. Available through Amazon and other book sellers (cost about $30).

What women & their men need to know about prostate cancer
(2nd edition), (2007). Author: Irena Madjar and Gail Tingle. Not as comprehensive a book as that of Rashid, but has a similar (but less detailed) coverage. Very readable. Just as worthwhile a read for men as it is for women. Publisher: Prostate Survival Alliance Inc. Available from The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia - see this page. Cost $15.

BPH - Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia - fact sheet produced by the Andrology Special Advisory Group (SAG) of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand, 18 June 2008. This fact sheet provides a succinct description of BPH and its treatment. It can be downloaded from here as a 74 KB PDF file.
PSA TESTING

INCONTINENCE
Continence and prostate - a guide for men undergoing prostate surgery (2007). Publisher: Continence Foundation of Australia. The booklet states ‘Most men regain their bladder control over time and are fully recovered within 6 to 12 months. However, it is important to get professional advice to help cope with bladder weakness during this time. This booklet will provide you with helpful ways to improve and manage your incontinence following prostate surgery.’ The free booklet can be ordered from here.

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION
Saving your sex life - a guide for men with prostate cancer (2008). Author: John P Mulhall. Publisher: Hilton Publisher. Available through Amazon. Cost about $54 USD. The first half of the book discusses a number of issues that men diagnosed with prostate cancer should consider before undergoing treatment including discussing the likely outcomes for sexual performance. It lists important questions that men should ask their doctor(s) and the need for a second opinion if not happy with the answers. The second half of the book covers many issues relating to sexual function following surgery/hormone therapy/radiation etc and is an excellent reference for men undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. It is also a useful reference for their partners.

Cancer Council Nsw maintains a comprehensive directory for cancer services available in the Northern Sydney Region. A number of the services could be of interest to prostate cancer sufferers.
